Gut Friendly Caffeine Alternative Iced Drink

How are you handing the heat? Perhaps it’s time for a cold drink? Are you a coffee drinker?

How does your body handle caffeine?

While some people may thrive on coffee, others may only enjoy it for the taste, and perhaps coffee doesn’t like them so much. Caffeine can cause digestive distress in some people. So if you are one of them, perhaps its time to switch to something else like chicory root or dandelion root. These roots have an oddly similar taste to coffee without the caffeine, but with prebiotics. Prebiotics encourage good bacteria to grow in your gut promoting better digestion, and better bowel movements. So go ahead and give this gut friendly Iced coffee alternative a try!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of ice

  • 2.5 cups of non dairy milk (more if its not blending easily enough)

  • 2 TBS of instant chicory root or dandelion root blend (or instant coffee if your body likes coffee, adjust to your liking)

  • A couple of dashes of maple syrup (to taste)

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth and enjoy!

Let me know if you have any questions!

New Testimonial

Around 3 years ago, I was struggling with stomach pain, digestive issues and constant needs to use the bathroom at the most inconvenient times. I struggled to participate in social gatherings or sit through long lectures in school due to the intense pain after eating or even on an empty stomach. I was also in constant fear of the pain coming up which only increased feelings of anxiety and stress. I finally decided to consult a gastroenterologist who advised me to get a colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT scan of my abdomen and blood tests within the span of one week. After completing all testing, nothing functional seemed to be apparent to the doctors. I then decided to take a different route which is when I consulted with Taira. After working with Tahira and implementing the changes in not only my diet but my lifestyle, I began to experience a higher quality of life. I noticed physical changes and when I did experience discomfort I was able to better understand the needs of my body and what could be causing the pain. I felt more connected with my body and learned the value of truly taking care of myself. I was better able to focus on social interactions and my classwork when I was no longer in fear of eating the wrong thing and ruining my day. I never felt the pressures of maintaining a perfect diet rather I learned more about food and what is inside of it. I learned to be mindful which is what helped me maintain this lifestyle now for two and a half years. The experience of being coached by Tahira was entirely different from all of the tests and confusion that I faced years ago. She took a holistic approach to know about my diet, my stress level, and what triggers my pain. After advising me on the impact of inflammatory foods, dairy and stress seemed to be playing on my body, she continued to provide me with resources for my own knowledge and continued to check in on my progress. I would definitely recommend anyone who is looking to improve their quality of life and digestive health to consider coaching services with Tahira.

Water, why we need it!

Often times people complain to me about being constipated and when I ask them how much water they drink the answer is usually, very little. If we want our poop to come out nice and easy we need to drink plenty of water. In order to get the waste out of us, sometimes toxic depending on what you are eating or what chemicals you are exposed to, you need to drink water to flush them out either through excretion or sweat.

Not drinking enough leads to fatigue and brain fog. We need water to carry oxygen through our red blood cells to increase our mental acuity.

Got achy joints and muscles? We need to water to help pump oxygen to our muscles and to keep our joints lubricated so we can easily move around.

Get the picture? We need water to function properly, period.

What if you don't like taste of water? Try adding in some lemon or lime to your water or throw in some hibiscus petals for some flavor and color. Fill a jug or large water bottle (preferably reusable) with filtered water and set goals as to how much you'd like to drink. Drink, drink, drink and see which of your ailments disappear!

Why Meal Plan?

How often do we go grocery shopping without any direction, many times hungry, come home with a load of groceries and then have no idea what to cook at the end of the day? Many times grocery day also becomes eat out day! And many times thinking of what to make takes longer than actually cooking the meal.

writing.jpg

By sitting down for a short period of time once a week, writing down what you plan on cooking, what you need to buy, you eliminate all the time that would be wasted before cooking the meal, thinking of what to cook. You also reduce the amount of food wasted that was sitting in the fridge because you didn’t know what you would do with it or when.

All you need to do is mark down your breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for the week. Check the fridge, freezer and pantry then make your grocery list.

But I get it, not everyone knows what to cook or maybe even knows how to cook. Or maybe you don't have the time. Some people need a little extra help in choosing healthy meals, how much to cook and when. That’s where I come in :)

I now offer healthy meal plans customized to your dietary needs and wants. Can’t have eggs? No problem. Lactose intolerant? I got you. Celiac disease? All the recipes on my meal plans are gluten free. Don’t like a certain vegetable? I won’t include it. If you would like some help in meal planning, contact me and we’ll put something together that will get you eating the right way suited for you. Tahira@wellnessreclaimed.com

Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie

Simple and so beneficial! This smoothie is not a sweet smoothie, its more like a tangy juice. The vegetables can blend down really well, almost to a juice consistency, rather than a thick smoothie so you get the extra benefit of increasing your fluid intake.

Inflammation is the cause for most diseases. Silent inflammation can occur in the body without us even realizing it. By reducing our inflammation, we can significantly reduce the chance of disease, improve mobility and heart health.

This recipe is low in sugar (sugar is a major cause of inflammation). Celery and Cucumbers are very low in sugar. Ginger, pineapple, and limes contain anti-inflammatory properties. Spinach is loaded with vitamins and minerals from potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron and calcium!

Simple Changes, Lasting Impact: #4 Water

upload.jpg

Water, drink more water!

Fairly clean water is accessible to many people (though unfortunately not to everyone). Water is life.  Without water we would not be able to survive for more than a few days. Our bodies consist of 60-70% water and if we don't replenish it on a daily basis it leads to a whole host of problems. What you ask?

When we are feeling thirsty it means we have already reached the point of dehydration. Many times when we feel hungry we are actually thirsty and eat when we aren't supposed to. Therefore it lessons our cravings.
