I know this is a little late but there is still plenty of time left to get some great produce locally. I'm surprised that so many people have not yet explored farmer's Markets or farm stands that pop up all over the country during the summer. I absolutely love the markets. You don't know what you are missing!
Not only are the colors so vibrant but the fruits and vegetables are delicious. Definitely much tastier than food shipped half way across the world.
Is it all organic? No. Just because something is at the farmer's market doesn't mean it's organic. And just because something is not labeled organic doesn't mean it isn't. Confused? :) don't be. Each farmer grows their produce in a way they think is best. So how do you know what is organically grown? (I recommend getting organic or clean produce whenever possible). It'll either be labeled as organic if the farmer paid for the certification (which unfortunately is expensive) or you ask them if their produce is clean (they don't usually call it organic if they do not have the certification). Simple! Most farmers are happy to tell you what goes into growing their crops so just ask!
So next time you pass by a farm stand don't be afraid to stop, I'm sure you won't regret it. Or look up when your local farmer's market takes place and check it out. Other than produce they usually have other local products from fresh baked goods, dairy products, plants, herbs, teas, soaps, candles to other hand crafted wares.
I love exploring the farmer's Markets in Ottawa, ON and Troy, NY and my favorite farm stand is Dusty's Garden on Robertson Rd. Where are your favorite markets? Share your knowledge in the comments.
